This project called PlayViz focused on developing a prototype for gesture-based interaction
with data, I had the opportunity to contribute to the design and
research process within a two-person team. Our primary goal was to
create an interface that would enable natural and intuitive interactions
with data through gestures, exploring the potential usefulness of this
interaction method for the future.
The project revolved around the crucial topic of mental health
worldwide, particularly relevant during the challenging times of the
pandemic when the project was implemented. To achieve our objectives,
the chosen technology for the gesture recognition was the Azure Kinect
camera in combination with the Unity game engine.
In the development process, different
concepts of how gestures could be used to create an intuitive
interaction as well as design approaches to combine the data with
the gestures were developed and selected. The resulting prototype
contains three screens, each serving a distinct purpose. Users can
select different countries and compare GDP data with mental health
indicators over a timeline. Additionally, the prototype enables
exploration of the prevalence of various mental health disorders
across different countries.
During the project, I actively contributed to the design and
research process. in the implementation phase, my focus was
on developing the main country selection screen, and I also took
charge of designing and implementing the timeline screen, including
interface creation and interaction design.
